London-bound band The Manatee High School Marching Band – above, performing for the Bradenton City Council - has been selected from thousands of bands across the country to participate in the 2009 London New Year's Day Parade from December 27th to January 3rd. But the trip to England is expensive, and the students are seeking help from the community. East Bradenton’s Glazier-Gates Park slated for improvements One of the oldest parks on Bradenton’s east side will get a makeover this winter, thanks to a Sarasota lawn care company’s winning entry about public spaces in need of a little sprucing up. Tammy Kovar, owner of Biological Tree Services, submitted one of three winning entries for the first Bayer Environmental Science GreenSpace Renovation contest. The nationwide contest encouraged professional lawn care operators across the country to nominate a public space in need of renewal and enhancement. ‘Feed the Hungry’ drive this Friday in Sarasota More than 75 volunteers from local churches, schools, service agencies and concerned private citizens will sort and package more than 30 tons of food collected throughout Manatee and Sarasota counties by the Mayors’ Feed the Hungry Program. Also, about 1,500 turkeys have been donated to the program from The Joy FM 88.1’s “T-Shirts for Turkeys” campaign. The food drive is scheduled for 1-5 p.m. Friday at the Sarasota Fair Grounds, 3000 Ringling Blvd. The event will take place in the fair grounds’ grass parking lot along Fruitville Road. Firefighters plan second training operation at ‘Pink Palace’ The Bradenton Fire Department, along with fire districts from across Manatee County, will participate in a major training operation this week in downtown Bradenton. Firefighters will simulate a multi-jurisdictional effort to rescue victims trapped in the Riverpark Grande, the building also known as the “Pink Palace.” Actors will portray “real life” victims. Training operations will be from about 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The City plans to close off 10th Street West and portions of Third and Fourth avenues west during those hours. This is a follow up to a similar training exercise last month. NEW!
Get Down Downtown set for Thursday The popular street part known as Get Down, Downtown returns to historic Old Main Street in Bradenton the evening of Nov. 20. The event is from 5-10 p.m. on Old Main Street (12th St. W.) between Manatee and Third avenues west. The event will feature live music from The Shaman Band, food, beverage and craft vendors and more. Also scheduled to attend this Get Down is the Tampa Bay Rays Street Team, which includes the Rays vehicle, an inflatable whiffle ball hitting cage and prizes. Scam attempts to scare relatives into wiring money The Bradenton Police Department’s Economic Crimes Division has issued a warning to citizens of a common scam that attempts to trick relatives into wiring money to a foreign country to “rescue” their child or grandchild. Recently, two such incidents in the past two weeks have been reported in the City of Bradenton, said Sgt. L.J. Millard of the department’s Crime Prevention Division. In one case, a victim was bilked out of $6,000 – and there is little chance of recovering the money. Click on the header for more information.
